History

North Dakota became the 39th state on November 2, 1889.

Its quarter features two American bison grazing beneath the rugged buttes of the North Dakota Badlands.

Bison once roamed the Great Plains in enormous numbers and remain deeply connected to the history, wildlife, and cultures of the region. The Badlands backdrop further connects the design to North Dakota's distinctive western landscape.
