History

Released in 2003, the Alabama quarter honors the state's history through one of its most famous citizens: Helen Keller. Alabama became the 22nd state admitted to the Union on December 14, 1819, which is why the year 1819 appears on the original coin.

The reverse of the quarter features Helen Keller seated with a book, surrounded by an Alabama longleaf pine branch and magnolias. Beneath Keller is a banner reading “Spirit of Courage,” recognizing the determination and accomplishments that made her an internationally recognized author, advocate, and educator.

One particularly historic detail makes the Alabama quarter unlike any U.S. circulating coin that came before it: Keller's name appears in both English and a reduced-size version of Braille, making the Alabama quarter the first circulating U.S. coin to feature Braille.

When the quarter is transformed into a ring, portions of these original inscriptions and design elements become part of the band. Because every coin forms a little differently, no two Alabama coin rings are exactly alike.
