History

The Arkansas State Quarter was released in October 2003 as the 25th coin in the U.S. Mint's 50 State Quarters Program. Arkansas became the 25th state admitted to the Union on June 15, 1836, placing the Arkansas quarter at the halfway point of the 50-state collection.

The reverse of the quarter combines several symbols representing Arkansas's landscape, wildlife, and history. At the center is a diamond, representing the state's rich diamond resources. Arkansas is home to Crater of Diamonds State Park, where visitors can still search for naturally occurring diamonds.

The design also features rice stalks, recognizing the importance of rice cultivation to Arkansas agriculture, along with a mallard duck flying above a lake, representing the state's many lakes, streams, wetlands, and its long association with waterfowl.

Together, these elements helped the U.S. Mint represent Arkansas's nickname, “The Natural State,” within the design of a single quarter.

The coin also bears “Arkansas” and “1836,” commemorating the year Arkansas joined the United States.

When the quarter is transformed into a ring, portions of the original imagery, lettering, and coin details wrap around the band. Why Can't I Choose the State AND the Year?

Each state design was produced during its designated year as part of the U.S. Mint's 50 State Quarters Program.

The program ran from 1999 through 2008, with five state quarters released each year in the order the states ratified the Constitution or were admitted into the Union.

For Arkansas, that year is 2003.

That means an authentic Arkansas State Quarter Coin Ring will always be made from a 2003 Arkansas quarter. An Arkansas State Quarter dated 1995, 2000, 2008, or another year does not exist.

So, while you can choose your state or a specific year, you generally cannot choose both.
