History

New Mexico became the 47th state on January 6, 1912.

The quarter features a topographical outline of New Mexico with the Zia sun symbol placed prominently over the design. The Zia symbol, originating with the Indigenous Zia people, also appears on the New Mexico state flag.

The coin carries the inscription “Land of Enchantment,” New Mexico's famous nickname, along with “1912” to commemorate the year of statehood.
