History

New Jersey became the third state to ratify the Constitution on December 18, 1787.

Its quarter recreates the famous scene of George Washington crossing the Delaware River during the American Revolution. Washington and his troops made the dangerous crossing on the night of December 25–26, 1776, before launching a surprise attack against Hessian forces at Trenton.

The image was inspired by Emanuel Leutze's famous painting Washington Crossing the Delaware, connecting the quarter directly to one of the most recognizable moments in American history.
