History

Hawaii became the 50th state on August 21, 1959, making it the final state admitted to the Union.

Its quarter features King Kamehameha I, the ruler who united the Hawaiian Islands into a single kingdom in the early 19th century. Behind him are the Hawaiian Islands themselves.

The inscription “UA MAU KE EA O KA ʻĀINA I KA PONO” appears on the coin, commonly translated as “The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.” It is Hawaii's state motto.
