History

Utah became the 45th state on January 4, 1896.

Its quarter features two locomotives facing one another at the joining of the transcontinental railroad, with a golden spike between them.

The scene commemorates the completion of the first transcontinental railroad at Promontory Summit, Utah, in 1869, an event that connected the eastern and western United States by rail.

The design carries the inscription “Crossroads of the West.”
