Released in 2001 as the 12th coin in the 50 State Quarters Program, the North Carolina Quarter commemorates the state's remarkable contributions to American aviation.

The coin features the Wright brothers' historic first powered flight at Kitty Hawk on December 17, 1903, alongside the inscription "FIRST FLIGHT."

This achievement forever changed the course of transportation and helped establish North Carolina's enduring identity as "First in Flight."

The quarter also features 1789, the year North Carolina became the 12th state to join the Union.

State Quarters were released between 1999 and 2008, with five different states represented each year. Because of this, it isn't possible to combine a particular state design with an unrelated production year.
