History

The Colorado State Quarter was released on June 14, 2006, as the 38th coin in the U.S. Mint's 50 State Quarters Program. Colorado became the 38th state admitted to the Union on August 1, 1876.

That date gave Colorado its famous nickname, “The Centennial State,” because it joined the Union exactly 100 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

The reverse of the quarter celebrates the landscape for which Colorado is famous. Its centerpiece is a sweeping view of the Rocky Mountains, with evergreen trees rising in the foreground.

Across the mountains stretches a banner bearing the inscription “Colorful Colorado.” The phrase has long been associated with the state and reflects the extraordinary variety of scenery found across Colorado—from snow-covered mountain peaks and alpine forests to canyons, rivers, and open plains.

The coin also features “Colorado” and “1876,” commemorating the year Colorado officially became a state.

When the quarter is transformed into a ring, portions of the original mountains, trees, lettering, and other details wrap around the band. Because every genuine coin carries its own history and surface character, no two Colorado State Quarter Coin Rings are exactly alike.

Why Can't I Choose the State AND the Year?

Each state design was produced during its designated year as part of the U.S. Mint's 50 State Quarters Program.

The program ran from 1999 through 2008, with five state designs released each year in the order the states ratified the Constitution or were admitted into the Union.

For Colorado, that year is 2006.

That means an authentic Colorado State Quarter Coin Ring will always be made from a 2006 Colorado quarter. A Colorado State Quarter dated 1995, 2000, 2008, or another year does not exist.

So, while you can choose your state or a specific year, you generally cannot choose both.
