History

California became the 31st state on September 9, 1850, following a remarkable period of growth driven in part by the California Gold Rush.

The California State Quarter was released in 2005 and features legendary naturalist and conservationist John Muir standing before Yosemite's Half Dome. Muir spent years exploring California's wilderness and became one of the country's most influential advocates for preserving its natural landscapes. His work played an important role in the conservation of Yosemite and helped inspire the broader American conservation movement.

Soaring above the landscape is a California condor, one of North America's largest flying birds. Once pushed dangerously close to extinction, the condor became the focus of an extensive conservation effort and serves as a fitting symbol alongside Muir.

The coin also bears the inscriptions “John Muir,” “Yosemite Valley,” “California,” and “1850,” connecting the state's history with the landscape and conservation legacy represented by the design.

Each state design was produced during its designated year as part of the 50 State Quarters Program.

For California, that year is 2005.

That means an authentic California State Quarter Coin Ring will always be made from a 2005 California quarter. A California State Quarter dated 1995, 2000, 2008, or another year does not exist.

So, while you can choose your state or a specific year, you generally cannot choose both.
